What this muscle is
Joins the arytenoid cartilages on both sides. When it contracts, the vocal cords come together.
Why it gets uncomfortable
Making sound; the vocal cords come together when you swallow.
How it usually feels
A deep tightness at the back of the larynx; it passes during a swallow, and you cannot press it from the outside.
What helps
Swallow small amounts and speak more slowly. If choking coughs increase, see a doctor.
